Alessandro Garino Jazz Quintet (AGJ5): Alessandro Garino, piano/Fender Rhodes; Filippo Orefice, soprano/tenor saxophone; Federico Pierantoni, trombone; Stefano Dalla Porta, double bass/electric bass; Andrea Grillini, drums.
This band was my personal jazz dream team, a lineup of some of the most prominent musicians on the Italian jazz and experimental music scene. Active in 2017-2018, AGJ5 played a handful of concerts and recorded an EP, Cacti. The entire repertoire was my own music, drawing on everything that shaped me as an improviser and composer: Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Steve Coleman, John Zorn, Steve Reich, Claude Debussy, among others. Brief as it was, this project marked a turning point in my musical life: the hinge between my years as a performer and my life as a composer.
