PURPLE FOOD
Purple Food was a free jazz septet active between 2013 and 2017, and the first project I ever founded — together with Stefano Radaelli. The band played original compositions alongside cornerstones of the African-American jazz avant-garde of the '60s and '70s, drawing especially from Sun Ra and the Mwandishi-era experiments of Herbie Hancock. Purple Food moved fluidly between groove — what we called free funk — and moments of abstraction bordering on chaos.
The lineup: Alessandro Garino, keyboards; Riccardo Morandini, baritone guitar; Gianluca Fortini, bass clarinet; Stefano Radaelli, alto sax; Edoardo Marraffa, tenor sax; Andrea Grillini, drums; William Simone, percussion.
