TRENCH

A film by Serge Turgeon - 2024

In Trench, Serge Turgeon follows an art historian in Venice whose discovery of a yellow trench coat draws her into a darker, more intimate city, chasing the trail of a missing woman with the help of a cast of colorful figures from her community. When I began scoring the film, I wanted the music to mirror the protagonist's journey from cool, analytical distance into something felt rather than reasoned. The score rests on an orchestral foundation carried by two central leitmotifs: one for Laura, grounded and searching; the other for the shadow itself, the presence behind the disappearance, felt more than seen. As Venice turns tense and unsettling around the investigation, a song surfaces from its shadows, playing like a memory the city can't quite let go of: warm and human against the dread pressing in.

That song is "Pur di ballare", a tango featuring Salomé Perli on vocals and violin, with lyrics by Adriana Tosi.
